WINTER STORM

Winter Storm Alert and Emergency Preparedness Information for - Mayors, City/Town/Village Administra

The Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (via the Louisiana Municipal Association) is issuing this urgent notice regarding a severe, widespread winter weather event expected to most seriously impact the northern half of the state, with the greatest emphasis on the northeastern parishes.

Current forecasts from the National Weather Service (NWS) offices serving Louisiana (SHV, JAN, LCH, and LIX), the NWS Weather Prediction Center, and State Climatologist Jay Grymes indicate high confidence in an impactful and dangerous winter weather event beginning as early as Friday in the northwestern parishes and continuing into next week with bitterly cold Arctic air.

Key hazards include:

  • Freezing rain and icing: Accumulations of ¼      to 1 inch of ice are possible across much of the northern half of the      state. These amounts would be crippling, making travel extremely difficult      or impossible in affected areas for several days. A prolonged 3-day freeze      will exacerbate these conditions and could lead to widespread closures      into next week.
  • Power outages: Ice loading on lines and      trees creates a strong potential for widespread power loss. This poses      significant risks to vulnerable populations, including those in hospitals,      nursing homes, and other care facilities reliant on electricity for life-sustaining      equipment. Communities should prioritize backup power planning, generator      safety, and coordination with utilities.
  • Water system disruptions: In areas with      power loss or extreme cold, there is potential for loss of water pressure      and availability—particularly if residents leave faucets dripping to      prevent pipe freezing, which can strain systems during high demand or outages.
  • Debris hazards: Significant tree limbs and      branches may fall due to ice weight, creating roadway blockages,      additional infrastructure damage, and safety risks.

This event shares many similarities with the devastating winter storm of February 2021. Residents and officials should recall the severe effects and risks from that event, which included several fatalities due to:

  • Wind chill exposure near 0°F,
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning from improper use      of heaters, grills, or generators indoors or near homes,
  • House fires from candles, space heaters, or      other unsafe heating methods.

Water Chlorine Cleasne Scheduled

As part of the routine water quality monitoring and the Nitrification Control Plan, the Town of Benton will start a chlorine cleanse, system-wide.   Chlorine is used to destroy harmful microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses, which makes it an invaluable asset for water treatment. The cleanse will begin on September 1, 2025, and continue through November 1, 2025. During the cleanse, you may notice a chlorine taste and /or odor in your drinking water. Chlorine levels will continue to meet EPA standards.

Ways to reduce odor and taste:

1. Run the cold water tap for several minutes.

2.  Water filters can reduce chlorine taste and smell.

Who should take special precautions?

Customers who typically take special precautions to remove chloramine from tap water, such as dialysis centers, medical facilities, and aquatic pet owners, should continue to take the same precautions during the temporary cleanse.

If you have questions or concerns, contact us at 318-965-2781.

Water Rate Increase passed in october

The Water Rate Increase...

The rate increase was approved at the October meeting and will take effect on the December billing. Here's what to expect: a rate of $1.00 per 1,000 gallons applies to all customers, whether residential or commercial, inside or outside. No increase was made to the flat rates.

Inside residential customers are charged $7.89 per 1000 gallons plus a flat rate of $8.75. Inside commercial and compound rates are $7.89 per 1000 gallons and a flat rate of $9.00. Outside residential is $8.60 per 1,000 gallons with a flat rate of $14.50. Outside commercial and compound rates are $8.60 per 1,000 gallons and a flat rate of $14.75. To calculate your bill, multiply usage by the rate, divide by 1,000, then add the flat rate. If you have sewer service, use the same formula.

Inside residential customers are $7.89 per 1000 gallons and a flat rate of $8.75. The inside commercial and compound are $7.89 per 1000 and a flat rate of $9.00.     Outside residential $8.60 per 1000 and a flat rate of $14.50. New Water & Sewer Rates 2024

The Town of Benton's water system has adjusted water and sewer rates for all customers inside and outside town. Due to the changing economy, our costs have increased significantly, and we recognize the same impact the economy has had on households. Throughout the rate study process, the town considered every possible way to lessen the impact on customers. We value our customers and work hard to provide the best service at the best rate possible. That is why adjusting the flat rate, not the per thousand-gallon rate, showed the least impact on customers' bills.

If you have any questions, be sure to call us at 318-965-2781
